FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Research shows that student outcomes are highest when there is open communication and collaboration between home and school. One way to strengthen the connection with families you serve is to offer opportunities for learning on-site. Our Family Workshops come to you and arm parents with evidence-based information about child development and practical strategies they can use immediately.

Workshops presented by Becky Knutsen, M.Ed.
Becky is the founder of Student-Centered Services. She holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education and a Bachelor of Science in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.

Focus on the Nervous System to Change Behavior

Created by: Robyn Gobbel, LCSW, LMSW, RPT‑S

Facilitated by: Becky Knutsen, M.Ed – Student‑Centered Services

Length: 1.5 hours

This introductory workshop offers families or school communities a neuroscience-informed way to understand behavior as a product of the nervous system. Based on Robyn Gobbel’s work, the session highlights how shifts in regulation, connection, and felt safety can support meaningful change.

Designed for individual families, it also works seamlessly as a school-offered workshop for families—or even for a Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) event, which is a requirement in Minnesota.

Participants will learn:

  • How a child’s nervous system affects their behavior

  • How to look beneath the behavior and understand what your child is really trying to communicate

  • Simple ways to help your child feel safe and connected so they can calm down and learn

  • How to respond to big feelings with compassion—while still holding clear boundaries

  • Practical ways to repair after hard moments, rebuild trust, and teach what to do next time

Ideal for caregivers, parents, and school teams, this session combines insight and application, inviting attendees to shift from punishment to curiosity—and from frustration to possibility.
